understanding the under 19s

IN YOUTH WE HOPE & IN AGE WE EXPECT

across the multiple sporting events and initiatives unfolding across the world these days, there is one consistent thread. the world is getting ready to welcome a new set of champions. At the Australian open, in the winter olympics, in the U23 AFC, or the under 19 world cup of cricket a new bunch of athletes are taking centre-stage. A new crop of countries are producing the latest champions. A whole new sports culture is emerging from kids coming from mixed families. What is surprising is ... the reputation these kids come with.

The future is interesting because it looks different from the present. Countries often invest in future sports initiatives to avoid the mistakes of the past. investments are made, foreign coaches are sought, facilities are improved and diets are changed only to place an athlete on a podium.

Today development and training has followers. Even before these athletes start achieving, they develop huge fanbases. If in the past cameras captured the winner and printed them on the stardom flag, today cameras capture every gym workout, every practise session & the innocent fanboy moment with a legend. Thanks to series of winning moment live-streams, the podium is no more a moment of discovery, instead it is an expected outcome imagined by a universe of followers.

for the athlete him/herself, the journey into stardom becomes a mindful setting and achieving of goals. there is more encouragement in the moments of injury and loss, not just from the tightest circle of friends and family but also from the followers. what people cannot and will not tolerate are the mistakes of the past and hence when a new bunch of stars take centerstage they are clearly there erase the painful memories of loss from the past.

whether it is caroline wozniaki of denmark, nguyen quang hai from vietnam, shubnam gill of india or chloe kim the korean-american ... the future of sport looks promising as long as they can keep expectations alive.

every sport is about improvements and every sportsperson is about pursuit.

we are only what we chase !
